The Troop attended summer camp at the Medicine Mountain Scout Ranch in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The camp facilities were outstanding, the weather was perfect, and the Black Hills were beautiful.
While in camp, the Scouts worked on various merit badges, participated in 6 am polar bear swims, and interacted with numerous other Scouts including Troop 93 from Big Lake, Minnesota. In addition to these activities, our older scouts also participated in high adventure activities such as mountain biking, caving, backpacking, and rock climbing. And, as always, there was plenty of fishing.
On Wednesday, the Scouts left camp to enjoy some of the local attractions. The Troop drove through Custer State Park, home to a famous herd of 1500 free roaming bison and numerous prairie dog towns. The Scouts then hiked the Sunday Gulch Trail, a 4-mile loop that begins and ends at Sylvan Lake in Custer State Park. After dinner, the Scouts visited Mount Rushmore to experience this patriotic site.
At the end of the week, on the way home, the Scouts took a detour into the Badlands National Park in southwestern South Dakota. There, they hiked several of the trails leading into the sharply eroded buttes, pinnacles, and spires of the park.
